It's not dissimilar to the way people were treated during the Inquisition. But, of course, it's just another way that faith is misused. From what I have seen, not many people who have 'faith' of one sort or another actually believe it.
I have worked in Saudi Arabia and Bosnia, both overwhelmingly Moslem countries. They pray 5 times a day, on demand, when the wailing comes from the mosques (in Saudi, at least!) They believe that this alone makes them faithful. But when it comes to writing exams (I am a lecturer,) they will use every trick in the book to cheat. What astounded me is the fact that even those who I knew to be well capable of passing cheated too. The point is, they have no belief in themselves.
