The Archangel Michael
“He Who is Like God”

The Third Hierarchy - those closest to humanity

Principalities - the seventh choir
The Archangels - the 8th choir
Angels - the ninth choir

http://www.wendag.com/images/angelology/Archangel_Michael_Relief.jpgThere is a great deal of information provided to us on the Archangel Michael. Most of the Hebrew Midrashic or interpretation about this majestic archangel was given to Christianity through the Book of Enoch.

Michael is recognized as an archangel in all three major religions, Christianity, Judaism and Islam. His name means “who is like God”. He also has a mystery name of Sabbathiel.

The ancient theologians had a hard time trying to decide where to place this great angel in the celestial hierarchy. The Archangel Michael is the chief warrior in heaven and God sent him to deliver so many messages and judgments that the great religious thinkers have him represented in several of the choirs of angels.

He is ruler of the choir of Virtues. If you remember, the Virtues keep the natural laws of the universe and are responsible for miracles. Michael is chief of the archangels, prince of the Seraphim, “the burning ones”, prince of the presence, angel of repentance, righteousness, mercy, and sanctification.

Technically speaking according to Billy Graham in Angels: God’s Secret Agents The Archangel Michael must stand alone because the Bible never speaks of archangels, only the archangel.

http://www.wendag.com/images/angelology/virtue.jpgIt is generally accepted that the Archangel Michael has the task of weighing souls to determine their worthiness at the Last Judgment. In Revelations 12:7-12 he will lead the armies that battle Satan, the great dragon, and all of his demons. In the end he will be victorious.

In the recently discovered Dead Sea scrolls there is one titled the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness where the Archangel Michael is called the “Prince of Light.”

It’s like reading the final chapter of a good book first. Oh well, it is the struggle and the fight for all that is good and righteous between now and the end time that really counts and the middle is still being written. Thank God we have angels to help us.

In Islam he is called Mika’il. Although he is acknowledged as an archangel, he does not carry the same weight as Gabriel. He is only mentioned once in the Koran in Sura (2:98).

In this verse Bai awi relates that Umar ibn al-Khattab went into a Jewish school to inquire about Gabriel. The students said he was their enemy, but that Michael was a good angel bringing peace and plenty. He then asks the students about the positions of Michael and Gabriel in God’s presence. The students said that Gabriel was on His right hand and Michael on His left. Umar exclaimed at their untruthfulness, and declared that whoever was an enemy to God’s angels, to him God would be an enemy. Upon returning to Muhammad, Umar found that Gabriel had forestalled him by revealing the same message contained in verse 98.

Isn’t it amazing how interpretation can create so much conflict then and now?

In Muslim lore he is described with four wings that are emerald green and hair of saffron. Each strand of hair has a million faces with a million mouths and tongues that speak in a million dialects. They believe Mikha'il uses all his mouths to plead with Allah to forgive all the sins of mankind.

They also believe he opened Muhammad’s chest prior to “The Night Journey”, the famous vision where the prophet journeys to heaven.

In the Preliminary Discourse (rf. Sale, The Koran) it is revealed that the cherubim were created from Mikha'il's tears that were shed over the sins of the faithful and that he has not laughed once since the creation of hell.

In Judaism the Archangel Michael is the prince and protector of Israel. This is confirmed in Daniel 10: 13, 21. In Daniel 12:1 He will stand for Israel during the tribulation to come and later.

In Jewish Rabbinic tradition he acted as the advocate of Israel particularly with the angel Samael, Israel’s accuser. His hatred of Samael dates from the time when Samael was thrown from heaven and tried to drag Michael down with him by holding onto his wings. It didn’t work as God saved him.

The Israelites are particularly indebted to him as he was Moses’ teacher who in turn gave them the Torah. It is said in the Midrash Deuteronomy Rabbah xi 6 that Michael declined to bring Moses’ soul to God on the grounds that he had been Moses’ teacher.
Legend also says he assisted 4 other great angels, Gabriel, Uriel, Raphael and Metatron in the burial of Moses but not before he had a dispute with the devil over Moses’ body. Jude 9 Yet Michael, the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

According to the Midrash Rabba he single handedly and overnight wiped out 185,000 men from the army of the Assyrian King Sennacherib, who was threatening Jerusalem in 701 B.C.

In Joshua 5:13-15 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come

Michael is over all battlefield angels.

In the book of Enoch when the earth was in anarchy because of the fallen angels God sent the Archangel Michael to confine them in the valleys of the earth until doomsday.

It was believed that these giants were all destroyed by the flood, but these giants were fathered by the Watchers (fallen angels)who mated with human women, (the Watchers) these hybrids were known as the Nephilim.

Joan of Arc claimed that one of the voices she heard was the Archangel Michael and that he was a very gallant gentleman. She also said he and several other angels accompanied her to the castle of Chinon as she and her companions made their way through enemy territory.

One of his major battles chronicled by most religious texts is his defeat of Lucifer. Of course the ultimate battle is yet to be fought.

It is believed in the three major religions that Michael was the first angel to obey God and honor Adam.

In The Book of Adam and Eve (one of the scriptural writings not canonized in Judeo-Christian theology)and in the three major religions it is believed that Michael was one of the first angels to bow down before humanity. In this book he kept an eye on the first family even after they were tossed out of the Garden of Eden.

He taught Adam how to farm and later brought Adam to heaven in a fiery chariot for a tour of the heavenly realm. After Adam’s death it was Michael who asked God to cleanse his soul of its great sin and allow him into heaven.

I believe at the end of our lives or the end of times we will all see the Archangel Michael.

He is the angel of death carrying the souls of the dead to heaven where their lives are weighed in his perfectly balanced scales.

At the hour of death Michael descends and gives each soul the chance to redeem itself before passing. It is the last chance to win over evil.
