    Default Angelology

The Angelic Pantheon is composed of the Angels found in ancient scriptures, texts, and writings of the primary and secondary religious cultures. These records are the foundation of the study of Angels and is referred to as Angelology. The branch of Theology that is concerned with Angels.

Angelology, as a branch of Theology, is specific to Angels and covers their origin, nature, fall, classification, work, destiny, history, and interaction with humans, among other subjects.

Angel-ology not only delves into these studies, but also points to the existance of Angels in other cultures where the absense of structured religions and records allowed Angels to be known by other names and their influence attributed to other entities.

Without question, there is an amazing simile between "Supernatural" entities within the myths and legends of other cultures to those whom we refer to as Angels. We believe that those similarities, regardless of the "teller" or source, simply add to the credence that these beings did and continue to exist!

When exploring the Angelic Pantheon, note that its inhabitants are divided into several different classifications including Hierarchies, Choirs, and Groups:

There are three hierarchies and nine choirs in the angelic society. They are in descending order of their closeness to God.

The First Hierarchy – those closest to God

    Seraphim – the first choir
    Cherubim – the second choir
    Thrones – the third choir

    • The Seraphim Choir, is the highest class of celestial beings and the first Angels ever created. The word Seraphim is the plural for Seraph. The word Seraph is a conjunction of two Hebrew words, Rapha meaning healer, and Ser meaning Guardian Angel (not the Guardian Angel's we are accustomed to).
    • The Cherubim Choir, is the second Order or Choir in the first Angel Hierarchy behind only the Seraphim. The name Cherubim means, "fullness of knowledge, or, wisdom."
    • The Thrones Choir, a.k.a. the Ophanim, is the third Choir in the first Hierarchy. Unfortunately, there has not been much mention or information given on the Thrones. They are said to have the strange appearance of a giant wheel covered with eyes.

The Second Hierarchy are the priest, princes or lords of the court

The angels of the second hierarchy are not very well known. They are kinda like the second or middle child in a family. They receive their commands from God through the Seraphim and Cherubim, the first children. Even though they are quite and have very little contact with mortals God has given them tremendous responsibilities.

    Dominions – the fourth choir
    Virtues – the fifth choir
    Powers – the sixth choir

    • The Dominions Choir, a.k.a. the Hashmallim, is the highest Choir of the second Hierarchy. They usually appear as older, devinely beautiful humans with wings. In their duties, they watch over the lesser Angels and concern themselves with the details of existence.
    • The Virtues Choir, is ranked fifth in the total Hierarchy. These are the Angels who are sent to perform miracles on behalf of God. They were created at the same time as the Sphere and are charged with maintaining its heavenly aspects.
    • The Powers Choir, is sixth in the Hierarchical order. Powers are composed of members of the lower Angel and Archangel classes who have joined the "Angel Military." The purpose of the Powers is to keep the demons of Hell from overthrowing the Earth.

The Third Hierarchy - those closest to humanity

    Principalities - the seventh choir
The Archangels - the 8th choir
    Angels - the ninth choir

Of all the celestial beings in angelology, we are more familiar with the angels of the 3rd hierarchy which includes the 7th, 8th and 9th choirs.

I guess this may be what God intended since these choirs have direct contact with us.

    • The Principalities Choir, is the head of the third Hierarchy. Principalities deal directly with human issues within Heaven and report directly to the Virtues. Principalities are also the Angels assigned to watch over great Earthly things such as nations and religions.
    • The Archangels Choir, is the second to the bottom tier of the nine Hierarchical levels. The Archangels are an elite group of Angels. Although these Angels are supposed to help watch over the true or common Angels, and represent a lower class, most of the Angels described as being Archangels are in fact Seraphim, Cherubim or Dominions.
    • The Angels Choir, is the lowest class of the nine Hierarchical levels. By number, Angels are the largest of the Orders or Choirs many times over. Angels are the "messengers of God." In the Bible, and other scriptural or pseudo-scriptural works, they travel about telling men what it is that God desires of them.

"A real friend is like an Angel who warns you by her presence and remembers you in her prayers."

    • They have the capacity to understand and communicate divine knowledge for the Creator
    • They are the guardians of the fixed stars
    • They are keepers of the celestial records
    • They are the bestowers of knowledge

    Noted For:

    • In the Book of Genesis it is the Cherubim who force Adam and Eve out of Eden and guard the gates to Paradise and the Tree of Life, with a flaming sword flashing back and forth. They will be there until the Day of Judgement
    • Cherubim are the carved figures on the lid of the Ark of the Covenant
    • In Islamic lore, the Cherubim were supposedly created out of the tears shed by the Archangel Michael for all the sins of humanity

    Possible Origins:

The historical origins of their lore can possibly be traced to:

    • Assyria - whose term Karabu meant "great and mighty"
    • Akkadia - whose term Kuribu meant "propitious and blessed"
    • Babylonia - whose term Karabu meant "propitious and blessed"

Shedu, Human-Headed, Winged, BullIn some regions, the Assyro-Babylonian term came to refer to "Spirits" which served the gods. In particular to the Shedu which were human-headed, winged, bulls. Sometimes these Shedu were referred to as Kirubu, a term grammatically related to Karabu. The Karabu were represented as pairs of colossal stone statues found on either side of objects to be protected, such as the entrances to temples and palaces.

A number of scholars have proposed that the Cherubim were originally a version of the Shedu. However, while the Shedu were popular in Mesopotamia, archaeological remains suggest that they were quite rare in the immediate vicinity of the Israelites.

On the other hand, the related Lammasu, the human-headed winged lions, (similar to the Sphinx in appearance), were the most popular winged-creature in Phoenician art. As a result, many scholars suspect that Cherubim were originally a form of Lammasu. This is based upon archeological findings and opinions that the Israelites arose as a subculture in Canaanite society. Hence, it was only natural for the Israelites to continue using Canaanite protective deities.

The Lammasu was originally depicted as having a king's head, a lion's body, and an eagle's wings. Because of the artistic beauty of the wings, they became the most prominent part in imagery. Wings were later were bestowed on men, thus forming the familiar image of an Angel.
